Song of the day: Atmosphere - Watch Out!
Most of today was occupied by the last 150 pages of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Good book, but the last two chapters (excepting the final page and a half) were really god damn boring. It reminded me of something Phillip said once, about never allowing characters to wax philosophically or engage in a philosophical debate. Naomi said "um, that's all Paradise Lost is," to which Phillip smiled airily and said "When you're as good as Milton you can do whatever you want; until then, don't philosophize." For some reason, Huxley (or his editor) felt the need to take everything he spent 175 pages showing us, and sum it all up in the most boringly pretentious way possible, complete with quotes from philosophers, theologians, and Shakespeare. I'm not ashamed to say that I started skipping sentences, then entire paragraphs, looking for the point where the story picked up again. Still a great piece of literature-- as prophetic and profound as 1984 or Anthem.
I also got a spot of writing done for myself, picking away at an idea or two as well as continuing the transcribing work and writing the bulk of a new piece for Innocent Abroad. Watched The Departed with Martina, which is a fucking great movie despite it's running time of sixteen hours, twenty-three minutes. Ran out of wine, and whiskey, and couldn't care enough to go out for more.
